Garfield County School District #16 |
Garfield County School District 16 is located in the Parachute/Battlement Mesa commuities on the Western Slope of Colorado. We are a very rapidly growing district due to gas and oil shale activity. A bond issue passed in November 2006 will provide us with a new middle school, and family literacy center, and a support services building to help meet the needs caused by this growth.
We are located 5,099 feet above sea level in the Colorado River Valley. The White River National Forest extends to the south and the Naval Oil Shale Reserve is north of us. Parachute Creek intersects the town of Parachute going North and South, and the Colorado River separates the community of Battlement Mesa from Parachute going east and west. These waterways provide excellent opportunities for outdoor activities.

The Family Literacy Center is housed in the old Grand Valley School building, which is currently being remodeled and enlarged thanks to a successful Bond election in November 2006. The building that once housed K-12 now houses Day Care, Head Start, PreSchool, and Kindergarten classrooms. The additions to the buildings will be used to expand on all the current services offered, plus provide a place for Families to be a part of the education of their children. The remodel is scheduled to be done in October of 2008. The oldest part of the building, built in 1936, will still be visible as we try to keep a part of our local school history alive.

The Grand Valley Educational Career Center located at 281 N. Parachute Ave. in Parachute re-opened its doors in August of 2005. Thanks to a Department of Local Affairs Grant, (DOLA) Garfield County School District No. 16 was able to remodel the North Annex and turn it into the Grand Valley Education Career Center.
- In cooperation with Colorado Mountain College the building is becoming a bustling center. The Dual Credit College/High School (PSEO) courses are held here. These are college courses taught by college professors by which our Grand Valley High School students receive college credit and high school credit both for one class. This allows a student to receive up to 35 college credits before they leave high school. The expansion of classes is always a possibility. In the fall of 2008 the Welding program will be coming back to the district for our students and community members plus a Process Technology class. Colorado Mountain College classes are also open to the public.
- Grand Valley High School’s Alternative Education Program is held here during the school year.
- English as a Second Language is a class offered at the Career Center with classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the morning and in the evening
- There is a wide variety of Energy Health and Safety training done at the Career Center which is organized by Colorado Mountain College.
- Community meetings are welcomed at the Grand Valley Educational Career Center.
- Any questions please contact Sherry Loschke@ 285-5706
